B.K. Boris discusses her breakout Lovelight rom-com series
"At Lovelight, there’s always a cup of hot cocoa waiting … and a bunch of people waiting to talk about you on the phone tree."
If you’re looking for a rom-com read that’s the epitome of a cosy, feel-good read, look no further than B.K. Borison’s Lovelight series. Set in the idyllic town of Inglewild, the Lovelight series gives you everything you could possibly want from a small town romance and with book one in the series, Lovelight Farms, having officially hit shelves in the UK, we were lucky enough to get to chat to B.K. Borison all about it.
Hi Becs! It’s so lovely to get to chat to you today to celebrate your gorgeous Lovelight series officially being published in the UK! What has your journey from writing to publication been like so far?
It’s been an absolute whirlwind. Never in a million years did I think I would be published internationally. I started writing in my free time during the pandemic because I wanted to disappear into a different world that felt good and safe. I told myself I’d finish out the Lovelight series and then see what happened. My world has completely changed since I published.
The romance, the small town setting (Inglewild has my heart), the characters; I loved it all! Can you tell us a little about the inspirations behind the Lovelight series and how this town and its inhabitants came about?
I truly wanted Inglewild and Lovelight to feel like the type of community we all deserve. I wanted characters that were deeply invested in each other’s lives and cared about one another. For me, Inglewild is a place I want to disappear into when our world feels a little too heavy. At Lovelight, there’s always a cup of hot cocoa waiting … and a bunch of people waiting to talk about you on the phone tree.

From best-friends-to-lovers to fake dating to second chance romance to sunshine x sunshine, the Lovelight series features some of my all-time favourite romance tropes. Did you have a favourite to develop whist writing and is there one you’ve yet explored but would like to?
I’d love to write best friend’s sibling. I think we see a touch of that in Business Casual with Charlie getting heart eyes over Beckett’s youngest sister, but I’d really love to write more of it. I think there’s something special about the pining of wanting someone you’re not supposed to have. I’d also love to write a single parent story. And a sports romance. Basically, I have a wish list a mile long for stories still sitting in my head.
Out of the three heroines in the Lovelight series so far, who do you see the most of yourself in and who do you think you’d get on with best?
I think I poured the most of myself into Stella. Her open heart, her willingness to gloss over the details to see the best in a situation … I think Stella willingly buries her head in the sand to make her life obstacle free and there’s a lot of me in that overall sentiment. I’d honestly love to hang out with all the Lovelight ladies. A bottle of wine and a plate of cookies and that’s my happy place.
Do you have any top tips for aspiring authors wanting to try their hand at writing a rom-com?
I’d say just do it. I spent a lot of time waiting and wondering instead of sitting down and working on my ideas. There was a lot of fear in getting started. When I stopped putting pressure on myself, that’s when it took off for me. Once the story is out and on paper, you can work on tinkering it to a place you’re happy. But getting that first draft out is the toughest part.

For those of us desperate for more of your writing, are you currently working on anything and if so, is there anything you can share with us?
I am currently working on my fifth book, completely unrelated to the Lovelight series. It’s the first book in a whole new world and I’m having an absolute blast writing it. I don’t want to share too much, but it’s based in Baltimore and has my favorite cast of characters I’ve written yet.
Finally, since Lovelight Farms, book one in the Lovelight series, is set around Christmas, I have to ask: what is your favourite Christmas rom-com and why?
I love The Holiday. Jude Law is absolute perfection in that film and the soundtrack is incredible. I love a good opposites attract romance.
