While U.S. presidential nominees Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump make new headlines surrounding the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, it might be surprising to see decidedly non-politician Demi Lovato also making the political news.
At the tender age of 18, Demi stood face-to-face with the difficulties of mental health issues. With the strains of being a popular child star, Demi had to publicly deal with her depression, eating disorder, self-harm and later-diagnosed bi polar disorder. The combination of these struggles caused her to pull out of touring with The Jonas Brothers back in 2010.
Since undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation centre, Demi has been a proud spokesperson for mental health charities and organisations. Monday night saw Lovato, now aged 23, raise awareness about the underlying problems of mental health. Speaking to millions of people, Demi discussed a deep and personal topic, which earned her a massive applause for her moving and motivational speech.
“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness, but I’m lucky,” she said. “I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility. Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, either because they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment.
“Untreated mental illness can lead to devastating consequences including suicide, substance abuse and long-term medical issues.
“We can do better. Every one of us can make a difference by getting educated on this epidemic and its frightening statistics and by breaking the stigma.”

The ‘Body Say’ singer urged politicians to make healthcare accessible to everyone, and she personally believes that Hillary Clinton would do exactly that.
Demi ended her speech by singing her hit single ‘Confident’, a self-loving pop anthem which praises the acceptance of having good self-esteem.
