It’s about to be lit – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 review
[This article may contain spoilers for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’]
Finally. I can’t remember how long I’ve waited for this movie. Probably since the end of the first one. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ premiered in Australia this week and I was too keen. I was so excited. I had high expectations and couldn’t take the smile off my face for the entire day. So… did GOTG 2 live up to the hype?
Yes. I enjoyed every single second. It started off amazing because how can you not fall in love with Baby Groot? I want twenty. That entire opening scene of the entire gang fighting the alien in the background with Groot just casually dancing up front and centre was awesome. I loved it.
And no joke, every single scene with Baby Groot in it had everyone in the cinema saying “awww”. Same. If anyone ever hurt Baby Groot, there would be an uproar. He is just too precious for this world.
Now, I believe that this film was way funnier than the first. But was it too funny and not enough action? A little bit, yes. But that was okay for me. The first movie was all about establishing these characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Now, in the second one, you have a chance to really explore the characters and their relationships. Which is what I thought was so great about it.
In saying that, the action scenes were amazing. The special effects team really outdid themselves. The entire set for Ego’s planet was brilliant. Magical even. It was really cool to see. I especially enjoyed the several different “space jumps” throughout the different planets. And I loved Stan Lee’s cameo, as usual. How can you not love that man?
For the actual storyline, it was pretty good. A little slow at times, but the payoff is so worth it. Also the casts’ amazing acting ability was enough to make up for it. I’ll be honest, I found myself siding with Gamora in regards to not trusting Peter’s father. I’ve seen a lot of movies and shows and the deadbeat dad story is always suspicious. You can’t trust them. Period.
Another thing I loved was the addition of a few new characters. Mantis, seriously bless her soul. She was just so innocent and just hidden away from everything. I did kind of like the idea of Drax and Mantis together. The beginning of something new? Also Yondu’s sidekick. He was cool. I liked him.
One of my favourite things is that GOTG went from being hilariously funny and action-packed to downright emotional and sad within minutes. I’m not going to spoil the plot twists but damn I did NOT see them coming. The entire cinema was shook. I was in disbelief. Did they just do that? Did that actually happen? Some people may have seen it coming but honestly, I didn’t. And that’s one of the reasons I loved Vol. 2 so much. It surprised me.
And now I’m even more excited for Vol. 3 and for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Seeing the Guardians and the Avengers all together? Damn, it’s going to be EPIC.
Rating: 4.5/5 stars.
