The last time fans saw Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen grace the screen as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader was back in 2005 for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Now, 17 years later, the two actors return to play their iconic characters in the new Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Set 10 years after Obi-Wan Kenobi watches his Jedi apprentice Anakin Skywalker turn to the dark side in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the first two episodes of the new Disney+ series have fans of the franchise seeing the return of the beloved Jedi Master.

In episode one, after surviving Order 66, Obi-Wan is hiding on Tatooine, using the alias “Ben,” and from afar, keeps a watchful eye on a young Luke Skywalker. The Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend), Fifth Brother (Sung Kang), and Third Sister/Reva Sevander (Moses Ingrim) visit Tatooine in search of any surviving Jedi. Though finding one, Reva is determined to find just one — Obi-Wan.

Though 10 years have passed, living in solitude on Tatooine, Obi-Wan is plagued by dark memories from his past and struggles to use the Force as he tries to communicate with his former master Qui-Gon Jinn.

But when Obi-Wan gets a call from an old friend, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits), that his daughter Leia Organa (Viviene Lyra Blair) has been kidnapped and he needs his help in finding her, Obi-Wan refuses at first but then later accepts when receiving a visit from Bail himself.

In episode two, Obi-Wan tracks the kidnappers to the planet Daiyu and meets Haja Estree (Kumail Nanjiani), a con man who pretends to be a Jedi. Receiving help from Haja, Obi-Wan is able to locate Leia’s whereabouts and rescue her from the kidnappers.

At the same time, the Grand Inquisitor is informed that Obi-Wan and Leia are near, prompting him to lock down the city. Knowing that she’s obsessed with finding Obi-Wan, the Grand Inquisitor instructs Reva to follow his orders, but she disobeys them and places a bounty on Obi-Wan.

Learning of the bounty on him, Obi-Wan works to get out of the city as quickly as possible, but once Leia sees that they are after him, she loses trust in him and runs away, leading them to a rooftop.

Leia attempts to jump off the roof as bounty hunters begin shooting at Obi-Wan to get to another but falls. Before she can hit the ground, Obi-Wan uses the Force and saves her, regaining Leia’s trust.

Finding Obi-Wan and Leia, Haja helps the two and points them to an unguarded cargo port to use as their escape. He tries his best to distract Reva from following them, but she tracks them down and unveils to Obi-Wan that Anakin is alive.

The news shocks Obi-Wan, as he had believed that Anakin had died when he last saw him. However, before Reva can get to Obi-Wan, the Grand Inquisitor arrives to stop her and arrest him.

However, not wanting him to get the credit, Reva stabs the Grand Inquisitor with her lightsaber, allowing Obi-Wan to run and join Leia in the cargo port, escaping her. Still shocked by Reva’s news, Obi-Wan chillingly whispers Anakin’s name, and elsewhere, in a bacta tank, Anakin wakes up.

Though the new Disney+ series is limited and will only feature six episodes, the first two have already created an exhilarating buzz and have captured the attention of its fans, especially those who grew up with the prequel trilogy.

As a fan of the Star Wars franchise, I can vividly recall going to the movie theater with my family to see Revenge of the Sith. It was the first time I had ever seen a Star Wars film and my introduction to the universe only blossomed years later when I was older when my brother sat me down and made me watch Episodes I and II, and then the original trilogy.

And as fans, including myself, wait for the next episode to drop, if there’s one thing that I can tell so far from this series, it’s no doubt that it will be one exciting ride.

The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are available to watch on Disney+.
