The MCU reimagines what could have been in all-new Disney+ series What If…?
What if Peggy Carter got the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers? Disney+ new series What If...? shows us just that.
Just this year, Disney+ has given MCU fans such a treat. From WandaVision to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and just recently, Loki, the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand on its characters and its storylines.
And now, the MCU has introduced fans to a reimagination of the stories we know and love with the premiere of the all-new Disney+ animated series What If…?

With its series premiere, the first episode titled “What If… Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” begins with the events that MCU fans are familiar with — set during World War II, Steve Rogers (Josh Keaton) is chosen to be the first super-soldier.
Because this series is set on “what if” scenarios, the turn of events that occur are entirely different from the ones we have grown to know.
Before Steve is given the super-soldier serum, Hydra spy Kruger interrupts the procedure and shoots both Steve and SSR leader Chester Phillips. In almost killing Steve and running on limited time in completing the procedure, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) volunteers to take the super-soldier serum.
In this alternate timeline in the multiverse, Hydra’s leader Johan Schmidt aka Red Skull (Ross Marquand) still manages to get his hands on the Tessaract.
For Peggy, there is pushback from John Flynn (Bradley Whitford) to send anyone to stop Schmidt from his plans. However, with the help of Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), he secretly gives Peggy a vibranium costume and shield.
With Peggy destroying a Hydra convoy, she is able to get ahold of the Tesseract and Hydra’s scientist Arnim Zola (Toby Jones). With this success, Peggy is promoted by Flynn to a combat position and thus becomes “Captain Carter.”
Together, Peggy and Steve work on a rescue mission to save Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who has been captured by Hydra. Steve is given a weaponized and armored suit known as the “Hydra Stomper” from Stark, which he built using the Tesseract.
In finding Barnes and other men who have been captured by Hydra, Peggy and Steve, alongside Barnes and the Hollowing Commandos, go on to fight and take down Hydra soldiers and bases. However, during their attack to take down a Hydra train, Steve goes missing and is presumed dead.
Continuing with their plans to stop Schmidt, Peggy, Barnes, Stark, and the rest of her allies go on to take over Schmidt’s castle and discover that Steve is alive. Using the Tesseract to open up a portal, Schmidt unleashes some interdimensional creature with tentacles which then kills him.
Peggy and Steve work together to stop the creature, but as the Hydra Stomper suit runs out of power, Stark works on closing the portal as Peggy sacrifices herself by pushing the creature back in.
With 70 years passing by, the Tesseract opens up another portal with Peggy appearing from it, meeting both Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) who then tell her that World War II ended a long time ago. Saddened with how much time has gone by and missing her dance with Steve, Peggy is glad to hear that they had won the war.
With What If…? exploring the many alternate timelines of the multiverse, the important moments we have watched over the years from the MCU give fans a chance to wonder just exactly what could have been if one single moment had gone different.
This reimagination is not only exciting to see, but it will surely have fans talking about the different outcomes of some of their favorite characters.
What If…? is now available to stream on Disney+.
