Set in 1871, New Mexico Jane (Natalie Portman) and Bill Hammond (Noah Emmerich) are being hunted by a merciless posse, ran by dangerous outlaw John Bishop (Ewan McGregor). With Bill helplessly injured, Jane must take things into her own hands as she seeks help from an old love connection, Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) – shots are being fired… bang, bang.
This film didn’t have an easy start, with director Lynne Ramsay quitting the project days before starting production. And that was just the beginning, there were also a series of cast changes. Considering all of the above, I think Ramsay’s replacement Gavin O’Connor has rescued ‘Jane Got A Gun’ from getting lost in the wild wild west.
The production has recreated the 1870s wild west with great attention to detail, and I think it distracted me from the often dull plot. The characters in this film make a mountain out of a molehill and thrive off complicated situations. (I doubt that most people’s first instinct when they find out their husband is being hunted for murder, is to seek help from an ex.) At times ‘Jane Got A Gun’ is farfetched, but there are some moments of interest when we learn more about Jane’s backstory. (Although the flashbacks are somewhat complex.)
