Okay friends, if you haven’t heard of the amazing and emotional Netflix original show ’13 Reasons Why’, seriously? Where have you been for the last week and a half? It’s been everywhere. On Twitter, on Tumblr, everywhere. And we 100% NEED to talk about it.

So what’s the show about? If you couldn’t guess from the GIF above, the show is about a girl named Hannah Baker who commits suicide. One of her classmates, Clay Jensen, receives a package in the mail containing a bunch of cassette tapes. These tapes are of Hannah explaining the thirteen reasons why she’s killed herself. And if you’ve received the box of tapes then you are one of those reasons. I was shook.

It’s very rare that I actually sit down and binge an entire season in literally three days. But damn, ’13 Reasons Why’ was so good, I just couldn’t stop watching. There was something about it that was so raw and so real that it was mesmerising. I couldn’t not watch.

Yes, the show is definitely heavy and tackles a lot of serious issues which no one talks about. And that’s why it’s worth the watch. It starts a conversation. It gets people talking about all these “taboo” subjects of suicide, depression, rape and bullying because you know what? Things like this happen to people every single day. Everything that Hannah goes through happens every day. And most of the time, we don’t do anything. We don’t see the signs or realise people are crying out for help in their own way. So important and it sends a very powerful message.

I’ve read some comments saying the show is “too confronting” or “uncomfortable to watch at times”. But that’s exactly the point. ’13 Reasons Why’ is supposed to be confronting and uncomfortable. It’s supposed to make you feel uneasy. It’s supposed to get inside your head and keep you awake at night. That is what’s so great about it. There were times where I felt unsettled and uncomfortable watching some episodes. It was emotionally draining. But again, that’s the point.

I’ve never seen a show that tackles all these issues so well. Sometimes you get a show that touches on it but never actually invests enough time in it. ’13 Reasons Why’ is just something else. It teaches an important lesson on mental health and the struggles people face in real life and throughout high school. An important message about how you should treat everybody equally and just be a nice and decent human being. Because at the end of the day, you never know what someone is going through. I can’t stress that enough.

If I’m being completely honest, this show has made me think about how some of my actions affected people in my past. We’ve all been there. Even if we don’t realise it, everything we say and do has the ability to affect somebody else. And that can make a huge impact on their lives.

So if you haven’t seen ’13 Reasons Why’ yet, please do. I can guarantee you will begin to think and change the way you talk to people. You may even learn a thing or two, who knows?

Also, Jeff deserved better! My beautiful child didn’t deserve anything that happened to him. All he wanted was to help Clay and get his grades up. I LOVE HIM, okay? Cool.
