Wonho talks Love Synonym Pt. 2 and his love for his fans

Over the past eight months, Wonho has been really busy. After departing Monsta X, he took back his rightful spot in the music industry by dropping his first mini-album, Love Synonym Pt. 1: Right for Me, in September. It debuted in the Top 10 of Billboard’s US World Albums. He has done livestreaming and concerts, kept his social media profiles up to date to strengthen the bond he has with fans, and graced many magazines’ covers.

After the first mini-album, we knew it was only a matter of time until Wonho would gift fans more music. And so Love Synonym Pt. 2: Right for Us happened. The new EP was released in March and is a continuation of Wonho’s journey into discovering new music styles as well as a love letter to his fans, Wenee.

In this second part, Wonho proves how well he can adapt to new music styles with more energetic beats, groovy sounds, and ballads. He also shows attention to detail by taking over some of the tracks’ writing and composition.

We had the opportunity to speak with the multitalented artist about his new music.

Let’s talk about your new single ‘Lose’. How long have you been working on it, and what made you decide to release it in English?

I had been working on my title track ‘Lose’ for around four months and worked on some of the other songs on this album even before the release of the Part 1 album. The biggest reason to release this track in English, which is the language most widely used around the world, was to share my sincere message with my fans from all around the world.

What was it like working with Kiiara on your song ‘Ain’t About You’?

Since it was my first solo collaboration, it meant so much to me, and I felt it was great to work with an artist who has such a unique voice. Kiiara’s voice was what I’d been looking for, and I was so pleased to listen to the track with Kiiara’s voice and mine blending together well.

Can you describe Love Synonym: Right For Us in 3 words?

[COLOR, MESSAGE, and LETTER]

I hope you will be able to feel a variety of colors through the music genres, which range from dark to bright on this album. I also tried to convey the messages I wanted to say to my fans, and it feels like I’m sending a letter to them through this album.

What triggered the idea to create the project Love Synonym?

Among the ways to convey my sincerity to my fans, I think that my music, albums, and stages are the best ways to express my sincere message and love. For the fans who send me a lot of interest and love through this project, I hope the albums will be precious like small gifts that will be remembered for a long time. There are many more things to come in the future, so stay tuned!

Lyrically, what’s your favourite song that you’ve written?

All the other songs are precious to me, but ‘WENEED’ is a message that I deliver directly to my fans, so I think it feels a little more special to me. “Cuz we need each other, like stars and the night sky, shining so bright.”

What do you hope for people to take away from listening to your music?

I hope my songs could give comfort to my fans, WENEE, and listeners. I also hope they feel they are not alone in the world, and there will definitely be someone who is always cheering for them and beside them, including me and my music.

If Wonho were an acrostic, what would each letter stand for?

W: We need each other
O: Only WENEE can make my day happy
N: Nothing is better than WENEE
H: ‘Happiness’ is another word that I call you
O: Our greatest love will exist forever

What’s on your bucket list?

To keep myself healthy and have a world tour, in order to meet WENEE around the world in person, as soon as the pandemic situation ends.

What else would you like to say to your fans at this moment?

It is never enough to say thank you for all your love and support. I will keep showing you a new and different side of me through music and performances, so please keep looking forward to it. Please make sure to always stay safe and healthy!

What’s the most random but positive conversation you’ve had with someone?

I feel grateful and glad when someone tells me, “I’m always rooting for you. I like your music. That was a great performance! You looked so cool on the stage.”
