It’s finally here! Katy Perry has finally released her highly-anticipated fourth studio album titled ‘Witness’.
We’re celebrating Katy Perry’s best songs, however the road to the release of this album has been quite bumpy for Ms Perry: her ‘purposeful pop’ era was quite questionable in the ever-changing themes Perry talked about in the three songs she released before the album.
‘Chained To The Rhythm’, the lead single, featured Skip Marley and was meant to kickstart her ‘Ray Of Light-esque’-era of politically charged pop. However, after public backlash Perry released the sexually charged Migos assisted single ‘Bon Appetit’ in order to bring the album campaign back on course. However, with Perry now facing criticism for appropriating black culture and Migos facing criticism for their homophobic comments, the song hasn’t done what it set out to do.
With the release of the Nicki Minaj assisted ‘Swish Swish’, Perry seemed to be coming back on course. Now that the full album is out, we’ll see how well it does in the coming days. ‘Witness’ is looking into the future for Perry, but we’re looking into the past at some of her best songs.
Perry’s first album ‘One Of The Boys’ had some great moments, however the self-written ‘Thinking Of You’ cemented Perry as one of the great pop songwriters of the millennium. Partnered with a beautifully shot music video, ‘Thinking Of You’ has become a fan favourite since its release nearly 10 years ago.
‘Teenage Dream’, Katy’s second official studio album, marked history when it charted five #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. The album and its repackaging became the soundtrack of the new decade with songs such as the title track ‘Teenage Dream’ narrating the euphoric feeling of being young and in love. ‘Teenage Dream’ has since become one of Perry’s signature songs, with the track being credited as a perfect pop song. Kanye West jumped on the official remix to ‘E.T’ which has since become my favourite Katy Perry song ever. With added production and two Kanye verses, the song is hard-hitting incredible pop.
How can you follow the almost perfect ‘Teenage Dream’? Oh yeah, you release ‘Prism’. Perry’s third studio album was introduced to us through the lead single ‘Roar’, which is personally my favourite Katy Perry single to see live. This album saw Perry experimenting with different sounds such as the Juicy J assisted ‘Dark Horse’. ‘Walking On Air’, however, was a standout disco track which pulled influence from artists such as Robyn. I have no idea why it wasn’t released as a single, because the song is bloody great. ‘Birthday’, a track from Prism, is reminiscent of ‘Teenage Dream’ in the lighthearted pop goodness of it all, however the video was too cheesy for its own good. It’s still a favourite though.
