In an era of bland singer-songwriters, duplicate rappers and culture vultures, Zara Larsson stands out as the next big credible popstar. With the release of first internationally released album ‘So Good’, Zara showcases why at just 19 she’s ready to take over the world.
Above is the video for ‘Ain’t My Fault’, one of the singles from the album. I chose this song as it’s the perfect summary for the album and for Zara herself. A carefree, woke teenager who is able to sing her ass off? Yes please. ‘Ain’t My Fault’ was co-written and produced by MNEK, an artist we at United By Pop love. MNEK worked on three tracks in total on the album, but his presence can be seen throughout. MNEK and Zara also worked on the international hit ‘Never Forget You’ together back in 2015!
The album is very British-sounding, despite Zara being Swedish. That may be because Zara’s major success has been in the U.K., or maybe because the U.K. music scene is growing and taking over the world (in my opinion).
Other collabs on the album include Wiz-Kid from ‘One Dance’ fame, Clean Bandit from ‘Rockabye’ fame and Ty Dolla $ign from ‘Work From Home’ fame. However, the album is all very Zara. It’s carefree, it’s sexy, it’s fierce, it’s bad ass and it’s just cool. From ballads to tropical house to trap, the sounds are interchanging, yet they never sound like a bunch of tracks thrown together.
Some of the stand out tracks are the Ed Sheeran-penned ‘Don’t Let Me Be Yours’ and the Clean Bandit-assisted ‘Symphony’ (which just may be the song of the year). To see a young woman be so confident in herself in an industry that tries to dim down the voice of females is incredible. She’s sexual, she’s independent, she’s a woman.
The album is an incredible debut from an artist who is going to go from strength to strength with every project she works on. I’m praying for tour dates now please Zara! We’re all waiting.
The album is out March 17th internationally. You can listen and download the album here!
