The Vaccines are no strangers to tearing up stages around the globe, but it’s been two years since the band graced their hometown of London. Wednesday saw the five-piece take to the stage at House of Vans, the intimate underground venue, packed to the rafters with lucky competition winners.
Here are five things we learned from our hot and sweaty night out.
1. They have SO MANY great songs
Seriously. Within 10 minutes of taking to the stage, we’d already been treated to ‘Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)’ and ‘Teenage Icon’. Both of which threw the entire crowd into a frenzy, if you don’t think The Vaccines are a party band, you’re wrong my friend.
2. ‘Combat Sports’ is going to propel them to the top again
After releasing ‘I Can’t Quit’ and ‘Nightclub’ from their upcoming album, ‘Combat Sports’, we knew we were in for a treat. The Vaccines’ sound has evolved so much since their first release way back in 2011, these new sounds are brash, assured and downright anthems in the making.
3. ‘I Can’t Quit’ T-Shirts
Okay so this was probably half down to House of Vans, but they had some amazing live screen printing going on at the gig. We got them while they were hot, made right in front of our eyes. Kudos for that.

4. Justin Young is the perfect frontman
Justin has always been a performer, and this gig was no exception to the rule. He shows exactly the right levels of nonchalance and passion behind the microphone. Is there really anything better than his powerful hand on knee stance when he’s belting out their songs?
5. ‘Your Love Is My Favourite Band’ will sound epic at this summer’s festivals
Taken from their impending new album, ‘Combat Sports’, ‘Your Love Is My Favourite Band’ is a jumpy, heavily pop-chorded song with Justin’s falsetto vocals mixed in for good measure. If the energy in this tiny venue in London was anything to go by, this is going to see crowd surfers as far as the eye can see on this year’s festival circuit.
The Vaccines’ ‘Combat Sports’ is released March 30th. Pre-order here.
