‘Come with me and you’ll be, in a world of pure imagination’ at the Roald Dahl festival on the 17th and 18th of September in Cardiff.
Not only a tribute to the author who would have been 100 years old this year but also quite poignant after the recent passing of Gene Wilder, who played one of our favourite childhood characters, Willy Wonka.
With the run up to Roald Dahl’s centenary, we’ve not only had the BFG film but a charity dream jar fundraiser too. With Roald Dahl Day also coming up next week on September 13th, we’ve got a lot of celebrating to do.
Why Cardiff?
Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales, to Norwegian parents Harald and Sofie Dahl. He spent most of his childhood in Cardiff until 1925, where he then went to boarding school in Weston-super-Mare. To celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday, where better to celebrate than his birthplace?
What can we expect?
Everyday places are set to be transformed and Dahl-ified! Get ready to see all your imagination come to life and meet some of your favourite characters. Though organisers have been tight lipped about the celebrations we do know there’ll be a cast of thousands taking to the city’s streets. Reported to be “the biggest theatrical event ever to be staged in Cardiff”, this production is going to be huge.
Performances, picnics and story telling
On Sunday 18th, there’s going to a huge Dahlian picnic which will be held in Bute Park. This isn’t just any ordinary picnic, there’ll be performances (though we don’t know of what yet), entertainment and readings from some of our favourite books.
Cardiff really will be, the ‘City of the Unexpected’.
