Earlier this week, NCT member Doyoung released his newest single “The Story”. While he’s been showcasing his vocal talent since 2016 as a member of the most expansive boy group in K-pop, 2024 marks his debut as a solo artist. Co-composed by the singer himself, “The Story” is a beautiful display of his ability as a vocalist.
Lyrics for the track are an optimistic perspective of the life the singer has made for himself and the decisions that brought him to where he is today, as well as a message of hope for the fans who have been by his side throughout his career. “And on that path, I paused / And smiled / I’m living my life” and “The many things I’ll find along the way / Whatever they be / I shall love / For they are all part of me” are lines that really encapsulate the feeling. His feather-light yet boisterous voice carries the listener through a dramatic culmination of piano, strings, and guitar.
Although this isn’t his first release, “The Story” feels like the opening track to a very successful career for Doyoung. Back in April, the singer kicked off his solo career with the album YOUTH – The 1st Album, which peaked at #3 on South Korea’s Circle Chart. Fans have been waiting patiently for solo music from the idol, and he certainly hasn’t disappointed. It’s difficult to have a conversation about powerful vocalists in K-pop without mentioning Doyoung. On top of his technical ability, there is an emotional quality to his voice that’s easy to recognize anywhere, and impossible to not be moved by. His discography as a soloist is off to an incredible start, listen to “The Story” here!
