Ed Sheeran has called it quits on Twitter, following a stream of abuse.
“I’ve actually come off Twitter completely,” he told The Sun. “I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it.”
Mr. Sheeran has said he’ll keep the account open, but from now on it will only share automatic updates from his Instagram page. Poor Ed!
He isn’t the only one to have quit Twitter, though. A bunch of celebrities have thrown in the towel on the social media site. Here’s a few you may have forgotten about.
Liam Payne
Back in 2014, Liam Payne took a step back from Twitter back when he was left defending himself after praising the U.S. reality TV show ‘Duck Dynasty’, whose lead star Willie Robertson had been accused of making homophobic comments.
Before calling timeout, Payno took to his own defense by saying, “Being a fan of someone’s show and the way they still hold a family together doesn’t mean I am OK with all they say.”
Facing a ton of backlash, Liam then went on to tweet a rant, before ending it with, “Sick of all this bull I’ll be back again when the freedom of speech law is back and people don’t believe to much into the bulls*** they read.”
It was a dark day for Directioners everywhere when he announced his departure.
Demi Lovato
Back last year, Demi decided to abandon her account with a tweet that read, “Damn I gotta quit sayin s–t. Bye Twitter.”
She then went on to say, “But why do people actually give a f–k what I say?? like if you don’t care the gtfo haha. That one time I started my own charity providing mental health care for people who can’t afford it and this is what y’all talk about.”
While Demi didn’t go into specifics as to why she decided to quit Twitter, it wasn’t too long before Miss Lovato returned to her social media presence.
Miley Cyrus
During the prime of Disney Channel, Miley Cyrus was probably the OG who decided to delete Twitter and tell her fans in song (or rap) as to why she had given up tweeting in this ICONIC video:
Miley was off Twitter for a good while, not returning until 2011 during her ‘Gypsy Heart Tour’ era. Now that was a long time from tweetin’…
Adele
Following the birth of her baby in 2012, Adele also temporarily quit Twitter after seeing death threats towards her newborn.
“She couldn’t believe people would be so awful about a baby,” a source told the Daily Star.
The internet can be a horrifically brutal, and we wouldn’t have blamed A for never coming back.
