Two years ago, we were graced with Billie’s song ‘bury a friend’ and what a treat it has been.
Coming off of her debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? , ‘bury a friend’ is the third single that was released and was co-written with her brother FINNEAS.
Of course, every song on Billie’s debut album is great but it’s this exact song that helped set the tone for the rest of it.
Billie spoke to Complex about the significance of this song. “When we made ‘bury a friend,’ the whole album clicked in my head,” she shares in a statement. “I immediately knew what it was going to be about, what the visuals were going to be, and everything in terms of how I wanted it to be perceived. It inspired what the album is about.”
And we know that’s true because the visuals for the music video are hauntingly breathtaking.
She continues by saying how “… ‘bury a friend’ is literally from the perspective of the monster under my bed. If you put yourself in that mindset, what is this creature doing or feeling?”
And you know what? Now that we have all been able to listen to the entirety of WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? it’s now easy to see how this specific song played a key role for the rest of the album. You can hear that dark and haunting sound in her other song ‘you should see me in a crown’ but you can also hear that upbeat tempo that is also present in her songs ‘all the good girls go to hell,’ ‘bad guy,’ and ‘my strange addiction.’
In all, Billie’s music is one that sets her apart from the many artists we have today, and ‘bury a friend’ just so happened to prove that.
Both visually and audibly amazing, it’s one that will always be remembered.
Celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Billie’s song ‘bury a friend’ which is available to stream.
