Beyoncé and Jay Z have become a staple of pop culture as both singular artists and one of the most powerful couples in the world.
Both have been on top of each’s respective game since the get-go. Beyoncé is the one of the greatest performers to have graced the stage, no questions. Jay Z is one of the greatest minds to ever integrate a passion within a business. On the run up to their anniversary, I question, just why do they make such a great couple?
The relationship started back in 2001, with the release of the Kanye West-produced ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ – a theme that both would keep running throughout their music. Although they’re one of the most talked about couples in the world, nothing was more talked about than the “Solange elevator event” that took place after the Met Gala in 2015 (you know the one).
Everyone thought this would be the end of the “perfect” marriage, however, I believe this was the start of a more honest relationship with each other and to the public.
The release of ‘Lemonade’, Beyoncé’s 6th studio album, saw both Beyoncé and in part Jay Z be honest to themselves and their audiences. The perfect couple who married in April 2008, had their first kid in 2012 – nothing could bring them down, right?
Wrong. ‘Lemonade’ shined a light on the relationship that had been put on a pedestal for so long and illuminated the flaws that made this relationship seem more… human. The album addressed the different stages of infidelity in a relationship.
Intuition, Denial, Anger, Apathy, Emptiness, Accountability, Reformation, Forgiveness, Resurrection, Hope, and Redemption.
The stages were narrated by poems, songs and visuals that showcased the hurt, anger and sadness a woman goes through in this situation. However, what was the most brilliant in this project was the way Jay Z allowed Beyoncé to release this project publicly and even made appearances throughout.
People to this day still question whether this was a marketing ploy or artistic honesty. I believe personally it’s the latter. The recent news that Beyoncé is expecting twin babies broke the internet and sent fans into a frenzy yet again. Now 16 years into this relationship (and 9 years into their marriage) Beyoncé and Jay Z are stronger than ever, as their flaws aren’t hidden anymore. They wear them on their sleeve, as a medal to showcase how hard they both have fought for this relationship in a world where many are waiting for a slip-up once again.
I congratulate Beyoncé and Jay on the baby news. I also want to congratulate them for not allowing the bright lights of the media to degrade their relationship. This is their relationship, and they live it out the way they want.
