Following her successful Sick of You U.S. tour this spring, K-Pop artist AleXa has written and released a new single called “i’m okay”. The singer penned a heartfelt letter to those who struggle with their mental health, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Month. The song’s inspiration came from the singer’s own experiences with bipolar disorder, showing solidarity with those who struggle with mental health issues. Fans who saw her live on tour got to hear the song early, giving the audience a taste of the artistic direction AleXa is headed in. Her previous release “sick” showed a darker, more brutally honest side to her artistry.
“i’m okay” portrays the feeling of struggling with mental health issues, while accepting that it’s alright to ask for help when you’re overwhelmed. “This song is a love letter to those struggling with mental health, and it comes from a place of honesty and understanding. I, myself, struggle with bipolar disorder, so I know the ins-and-outs and ups-and-downs of facing your darkest demons,” says AleXa. “More often than not, when approached with the question, ‘How are you?,’ our default response is, ‘I’m okay.’ I want this song to show that the conversation doesn’t have to stop at ‘I’m okay,’ and that it’s okay to be honest and to seek help when necessary.”
This track and her previous single reflect a more open and vulnerable side to AleXa, taking her music in a completely different direction when it comes to sound and songwriting themes. “i’m okay” opens the door for tough but necessary conversations, and doesn’t shy away from the idea of asking for help.
