Miley Cyrus is back with a bang as she releases her first new solo music since 2019. Her most recent EP, She Is Coming, was intended to be the first of a trio (that will eventually add up to make an album), but so far that’s all we’ve got and fans have been desperately waiting ever since.
That is, until now. A couple of weeks ago Miley hinted that not only was new music on the way, but that she’d be returning to her original pop rock sound. She tweeted ‘Meet Miley Cyrus… again. #SheIsComing #ButForRealThisTime with a throwback pic from her 2007 music video Start All Over.
It appears the initial trio of EPs has been scrapped and replaced with a full-length album titled ‘She Is Miley Cyrus’. The LP is expected to arrive soon and Miley has given us our first official taste with the lead single ‘Midnight Sky’ – an empowering anthem about staying true to yourself and finding self-confidence.
“I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone
I don’t need to be loved by you”
The disco-pop-country track debuted alongside a self-directed video, which sees Miley channel the ‘80s and draw inspiration from strong female musical icons, including Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett and Debbie Harry. The song actually samples Stevie Nicks’ 1981 single ‘Edge of Seventeen’.
It may be Miley’s most personal song yet and appears to reference her divorce from Liam Hemsworth (“Forever and ever, no more”) as well as her subsequent relationship with Kaitlynn Carter (“See my lips on her mouth, everybody’s talkin’ now baby”. Despite being vulnerable, the song is very much upbeat and sees her sing positively about her newfound freedom and personal growth. The track seems fitting for where Miley is at in her life right now and comes alongside the announcement of her amicable split from Cody Simpson.
Fans understandably had a lot to say, so we’ve rounded up some of the best tweets:
