Olivia Rodrigo releases her debut single Drivers License
Heartbreak has truly never sounded so beautiful.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Olivia Rodrigo released “Drivers License,” her debut single and music video. The song comes months after the 17-year-old first teased it on her Instagram in July. Rodrigo has previously found streaming success in the viral song “All I Want” from the Disney+ show, but her newest song proves she is well on her way to becoming the next big pop star.
Rodrigo sings so passionately about a heartbreak she experienced, it makes the listener feel like they’re going through it with her. Her age is no barrier to her art; her songwriting is vivid and honest. “Drivers License” is lyrically comparable to Taylor Swift, and sonically reminiscent of Lorde. It’s a breath of fresh air for your playlist: “Sidewalks, we crossed, I still hear your voice in the traffic, we’re laughing, over all the noise / God I’m so blue, know we’re through.”
The video is appropriately nostalgic; there’s nothing quite like being a teenager pacing around a cul-de-sac thinking about how a past love wronged you. The moody lighting and videos of an ex playing on a projector only add to the emotion of it all. It’s cinematic enough to be an A24 movie (obviously starring Olivia Rodrigo), if I’m being honest.
With a vision and authenticity to her music, it’ll be a treat to see what she releases next and how far her career will go from here.
