Interview: Phantom Runners open up about new material and future plans
Phantom Runners is a project from producer Adam Al-Hilali. The single ‘First Time’ which features Brooke Bailey was recently released and is available to download or stream. However, lots more is yet to come after such a positive reaction to the single.
Your brand new single ‘First Time’ has had some brilliant reviews, with one publication claiming ‘a true pop gem’. How does it feel when you get this kind of feedback?
Truly honoured, it’s so cool reading in-depth reviews, must mean it can really resonate with people.
How would you describe yourself to someone who’s never heard of you before?
A ‘future pop’ collaborator.
What is the song ‘First Time’ about?
That first flush of love or rush, people chase it endlessly some find it in different ways, but it’s all the same thing. Like when you’re innocent to something, or someone and it feels new, it’s a unique thing, it’s fleeting, momentary but perfect.
What do you want listeners to feel when they listen to ‘First Time?’
I want the lyrics to hark back to a feeling of when you first meet someone or were intoxicated by “something” and when it all started out, you tried to keep things going to relive the romance, but it could it ever be the same?
Who would you say are your biggest influences musically?
MJ in his prime, it’d be hard not to, when he walks out into Madison Square, lit up by a sea of speckled lights and breaks into ‘Man In The Mirror’ it’s magic, goes beyond music. His lifelong dedication to creating great art. Also Kanye in that respect too by becoming a great curator which is inspiring. Blood orange, Shura, Ralph, are pretty cool.
I’m taking a lot from the Berlin ‘Techno’ scene those guys are so ahead of the game in terms of production trying to see what I bring it to pop from it.
What is your musical ambition? Number one album, playing at Wembley?
Number one album, who would say no to either right? For me, it’s about the music, like how much can we affect people?
What advice would you give to your 15-year-old self?
Never stop, Stay obsessed. If you hit a wall, flip it to your advantage. Always keep vibing
Pokemon Go has become a bit of a worldwide obsession lately, have you found yourself downloading the app?
Hmmm, I have no real opinion of it.
But loving all things VR, it’s gonna take over.
If you were a Pokemon what would you call yourselves?
Adalemon, taken from Adal of course.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Big collabs on the way, currently working on our next single with Indiana, watch out, it’s gonna be huge and a whole host of truly inspiring producing.
