Making a triumphant return to the world of music, Emma Blackery’s ‘Magnitised’ EP is a six-track record which sees her talent on show in a new light.
As a supporter of Emma for some time, I’ve been very much looking forward to hearing this release and, like all other records, the ‘Magnetised’ EP did not disappoint. Having been known for her upbeat tunes, Blackery has taken her music in a different direction from her signature pop-punk style and delivers an emotionally-driven extended play, not shying away from the true, raw feelings put into her new collection of songs, which is evidently showcased in her vehement vocals. The acoustic number titled, ‘Instead’ takes full opportunity to present us with a stripped back Blackery, where underneath her badass persona lies a vulnerable and honest young woman.
While the first track, ‘Nothing Without You’, offers a playful and dance-worthy rhythm, do not be fooled by the upbeat nature of this song as lyrics such as ‘But somehow you saw through it all / And you took out all the dark thoughts that I think / Now you don’t return any of my calls / So I guess your heart was a one time thing’ come packed with a poignant message, which definitely makes you emotionally call out for anyone you have shared this kind of experience with.
The majority of the release offers heart-rending yet relatable ballads, but the latter track mentioned and ‘Don’t Come Home’ offer more upbeat sounds, letting us see the punk rock chick that Emma always has been.
This is perhaps Blackery’s most mature release to date and I am absolutely in love with it.
