Image Source: Billboard - If you don’t already know, Emily is an American singer-songwriter who spends her time between New York, London and Los Angeles. In 2015, she featured on the track ‘Until You Were Gone’ from The Chainsmokers‘ ‘Bouquet’ EP. Since then, she’s featured on more tracks with the EDM duo such as ‘Paris’, ‘Don’t Say’ and ‘My Type’. Now, she has her own single, ‘Hurt By You’.
We were lucky enough to catch up with Emily to ask her some questions all about her new track.
Tell us a bit about your new single ‘Hurt By You’. Was it influenced by any personal experience?
Yes! Absolutely – all of the songs I’m going to put out are 100% true and based on experience. I wrote “Hurt By You” at the start of the relationship that I’m in now. It sprung from a conversation with Scott Harris and Nick Ruth, who I wrote the song with, where I was explaining to them how it seemed to me like every relationship is doomed. When so many people in the world and in my life end up divorced, or cheated on, it would be crazy for me to think that my relationship wouldn’t suffer the same fate. However – these thoughts were almost ruining my relationship. You can’t fall in love with someone if all you can ever think about is how they’re going to break your heart. This song is a reminder to myself to not be consumed by these thoughts, and to realize that falling in love with the right person is worth whatever risk you might be taking.
When can we expect to see the music video for the single, and where did you shoot it/plan to shoot it?
No specific release date yet – still working out the kinks. I can see the whole thing in my head though, so we’ve just got to execute!
Who would you say has influenced you the most musically and given you the inspiration to become a singer-songwriter at such a young age?
Definitely my dad. He’s a musician himself and he always had music around. Whether it was the Beatles or The Beach Boys in the car, or he and his friends’ band playing 60s music in the house. Also, once I started writing songs, he was the one who encouraged me to record them and put the first band together of his friends to do it with me. He’s always been the most encouraging – he’s the best!!
Do you have to pinch yourself every time people refer to you as a GRAMMY Award winning song writer? To win a GRAMMY in your 20’s is pretty awesome! P.S. Where do you have it on display?
YES! It’s too ridiculous. The whole thing gives me a lot of perspective. If you’d told me a few years ago that this is where’d I’d be now I would never believe it. I actually don’t have the certificate yet but I’m thinking once I get it I’ll loop a chain through it and wear it around my neck. 😉
We wrote an article recently about you being heavily involved with The Chainsmokers, as you’re featured on a number of tracks on their new album. Will they be featured on your album at all?
I’m not sure actually but it’s definitely possible! I send stuff back and forth with them a lot, and the album’s not fully finished yet, so they may hop on some things, you never know!
Speaking of The Chainsmokers, you’ve been touring with them too! Are you planning on having your own tour anytime soon?
Nothing planned yet, but this is actually the first time I’ve ever been on tour, and I’m having SUCH a good time that I think I will have to book a tour of my own so that I don’t have to go back to normal life.
You’ve co-written and are credited on numerous tracks from the likes of Jessie J, 5SOS, Ava Lilly and Shawn Mendes to name a few. If you had to choose an artist, who would you love to pen a track for?
Rihanna!
