The Met Gala 2017: Fashion hits and misses
Every year the elite of the elite in the celebrity-sphere come together at the Met Gala.
Hosted in New York City, the Gala is put on to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costumes Institute, which is based in the city. Every year, a theme is chosen and chairs of the event are selected. This year, the theme was ‘Rei Kawakubo/Commes des Garçons’ with Pharell Williams and Katy Perry co-chairing the event.
There were some very conceptual looks that were pulled off beautifully and some that kind of just bombed. Standouts from the night included Rihanna and Zoë Kravitz, whilst Kendall Jenner pulled off what might have been one of the worst looks in Met history.
Best Dressed
Rihanna
Another day, another slay. Rihanna is undoubtedly the queen of fashion. Her red carpet, street and Met Gala looks have all becomet iconic. Wearing a custom ‘Commes des Garçons’ straight off the 2016 fall runway, the outfit was one of the standout pieces of the night, with every inch created with precision. One of the only people to truly follow the theme, Rihanna killed it!
Zoë Kravitz
Zoë Kravitz, star of ‘Big Little Lies’ (one of my favourite TV shows) completely blew me away with this satin Oscar de la Renta dress. Pairing this eye-catching dress with a short blonde ‘do and minimal makeup let the dress shine. However, with almost no material or accessories above her chest, her gorgeous face was emphasised. I love!
La La Anthony
After a much-publicised divorce from her husband, La La Anthony did not come to play. La La wore a dress by Thai Nguyen Atelier, which she said was put together in just three days. What blew me away with this look was the confidence that was oozing from La La. Sometimes a dress can give you confidence which makes the person look better, however in this case I believe La La’s confidence made the dress ten times better. What I also loved was that La La chose to accessorize each finger apart from… you guessed it, her wedding ring finger.
Cara Delevingne
Maybe a more controversial choice for best dressed, however, I loved Cara’s bold choice of suit and metallic hairdo. Showing just enough cleavage to keep the look stylish yet sexy, she paired with the suit jacket with a matching pant that fitted her perfectly in every place. Like Kravitz before her, the minimal amount of accessories above the chest allowed her face (and her metallic head) to shine. One of my favourites of the night!
Worst Dressed
Kendall Jenner
Where do I start with this god awful look? From the completely absurd slit on the front of the chest to the slit in the leg to the red lip, it was just awful. Kendall, fashion’s current It Girl, really fell flat. The limp, lifeless hair also didn’t help. I’m not a Kendall hater at all; I think she’s gorgeous, but this was just a horrific choice.
Madonna
Madonna turned up wearing a literal camouflage bin bag. Yes blah blah it’s Moschino, that’s cool, but come on, this is awful. The Queen of Pop deserves so much more than this. The god awful gloves with the humongous jewelry added to the horrors of the dress… it just swallows her up. However, if there’s one positive, I don’t mind her hair.
Overall, the Gala wasn’t the best it’s ever been, with most celebrities choosing to completely ignore the theme. However, some of the standout looks are some of the best I’ve seen for a while. So shout out to Rihanna and Zoë Kravitz for really bringing it this year.
