Title: The Silent Songbird
Author: Melanie Dickerson
Publication Date: November 8th,2016
Purchase: Available now in the US and the UK
Overall rating: 3.5/5
Great for: Historical fiction lovers, fans of Melanie Dickerson, and fans of the ‘Hagenheim’ series
Themes: Romance, historical fiction, retelling, medieval times setting
Book synopses: Evangeline is gifted with a heavenly voice, but she is trapped in a sinister betrothal until she embarks on a daring escape and meets brave Westley Le Wyse. Can he help her discover the freedom to sing again?
Summary: In this book, we follow King Richard II’s ward and cousin Evangeline. Evangeline is betrothed to the king’s closest adviser Lord Shiveley, a cruel and evil man. In order to escape her fate, Evangeline decides to run away, taking on a new identity as a mute and becoming a peasant for the family of the man that will be the love interest in the story, Lord Westley le Wyse.
Characters: Evangeline is admired by many because of her beauty and singing talent but is also very naive at times. Lord Westly le Wyse, our handsome, goodhearted love interest, is taken by Evangeline’s story, and even though he was great in almost every page, I found him to be immature and too gullible at times.
The writing: I found the writing to be simple, but I loved the medieval world setting.
Final thoughts: This book is #7 of the ‘Hagenheim’ series but can be read as a stand alone. I had no problem following the story. ‘The Silent Songbird’ is supposed to be a retelling of ‘The Little Mermaid’, and although I saw the similarities, there’s no magic involved in this story.
The plot is a bit predictable but with some great characters. We have Lord Shiveley, whom I found to be disgusting really, and we have, of course, some jealousy with another peasant girl named Sabina. I loved hating Sabina at times. Overall, this was an easy and enjoyable read, especially if you like historical fiction.
If you are looking for an easy-to-read historical love story, then go and pick this one up!
