Review: Every now and then you need to just curl up in your duvet and read a cute contemporary. Well if you’re in that mood then I have the perfect book for you – The Romantics by Leah Konen. A love story told by love itself, it’s definitely a unique story, and I’d definitely recommend you pick it up.
Gael Brennan is a high school senior, a movie enthusiast, and a true romantic. He’s in love with love. And he’s in love with his girlfriend, Anika….that is until it turns out she’s cheated on him with his best friend. Follow that up with an ill-fated rebound relationship and the messy separation of his parents and it’s pretty clear that Gael just can’t catch a break! Enter Love, our omnipresent narrator, hell bent on setting Gael’s love life back on the right track. But of course, it doesn’t quite go according to plan.
I really enjoyed reading ‘The Romantics’! It was super cute – a warm the heart, make you giggle, easy sort of read. It kept me entertained the whole way through. Love was the perfect narrator, so quirky! I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with such an original narrator. I loved the humour, the little nerdy references throughout the book…it was just so cute. But, actually, it did give a really honest portrayal of love, and what it feels like to want to be in love, to think you’re in love, etc. Gael’s pain and betrayal and need to be in love definitely rang through in Konen’s words. I’ll definitely be reading more of her books in the future. It’s dramatic in a funny, light-hearted way, but none of the love triangle, angsty drama that you see in a lot of contemporary books these days.
If you enjoy a fun, YA contemporary then I’d definitely recommend you give this one a read.
