Review: ‘War Dogs’… the film every twentysomething having a quarter life crisis needs to see
Lets throw it back to 2005. What do you think of? I see questionable fashion choices, flip phones and America fighting simultaneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Oh, it was the time to be alive. From the director of ‘The Hangover’ Todd Phillips, ‘War Dogs’ paints this picture quite well.
David Packouz (Miles Teller) and Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) are two high school stoners who reconnect and start working together. They find a large profit in selling weapons to the army, and make a small fortune. They are living off the crumbs of the big business that is war. As the story unfolds David and Efraim are left with their hands deep in the entire pie… leading them into a lot of trouble. (This pie metaphor is in the film and it’s great.)
Teller and Hill bring a classic noughties hilarity to their characters and at times make it hard to believe that this film is based on a true story. This film is being pushed as a dark comedy because of Phillips’ directing, and I’m inclined to agree with that. This film captures a crazy story, that sums up the complicated mess that is your twenties and learning to be an “adult”.
Maybe it’s because I fit the twentysomething bracket. Or maybe it’s because there are times where I’d love a chance to make quick money with my pals, instead of struggling to afford a vodka and coke in Spoons. Either way, this film is a must-see for all fellow twentysomethings going through the quarter life crisis. It’s comforting, lighthearted and bloody hilarious. (You can thank me later!)
