Melissa Landers is here with her romantasy novel, The Half King, and it features one of the best tropes that all romantasy books need — fated mates. Today we are honoured to have Melissa here to discuss why this trope works perfectly for the romantasy genre.

This guest post is written by Melissa Landers, author of The Half King.

There’s a reason why we escape into romantic fiction. Real life is messy and chaotic, and so is real love. Who can blame us for immersing ourselves in worlds where good things happen to good people, and true love triumphs over evil? And since wish fulfilment is the goal, here are five reasons why I believe fated lovers—aka: soulmates—are the best.

Romance: Let’s face it, modern dating isn’t very romantic. It’s a numbers game. If you swipe on enough profiles and exchange enough messages with strangers, you might find someone with whom you’re more-or-less compatible. So of course, we dream about the universe hand-delivering our perfect partner to us by way of a quirky meet-cute. This one is a no-brainer. I think we can all agree that destiny is more romantic than Tinder.

Longevity: Who doesn’t crave a love that’s guaranteed to last until death, and quite possibly beyond? Fated mates are forever—an eternal, fiery passion that transcends time—and isn’t that the ultimate fantasy?

Idealism: If you and your fated mate are created for each other, then you’ll never have to settle for anything less than your ideal partnership. Nothing will be lacking. You won’t have to fight to have your needs met, because your mate will naturally and effortlessly check all of your boxes. It’s a codependent dream come true!

No regrets: You won’t catch your fated mate texting their ex or sliding into a bikini model’s DMs. With your one true match, you can invest your whole heart and love freely without the risk of betrayal. There’s no chance of wasting decades of your life on a partner who ends up cleaning out your bank account and running away with that one sketchy coworker they told you not to worry about.

Teamwork: Like two halves of a perfect whole, you and your fated mate will complete each other—complement each other. What one person lacks, the other makes up for in abundance. The universe created the two of you as an unstoppable team, and just imagine how easy that would make your life.

If you agree with me, then I hope you’ll grab a copy of my new romantasy, The Half King, in which a failed oracle leaves her temple to serve an enigmatic young ruler who turns to shadow at sunset. (And no spoilers or anything, but they just might be fated mates.)
