If there’s one group in K-pop that consistently raises the bar with each comeback, it’s aespa. KARINA, WINTER, GISELLE, and NINGNING are showcasing their star power in their latest EP, Whiplash. This EP marks another milestone in their career, featuring it-girl anthems blended with aespa’s unique but yet experimental sound.

Leading the EP is the title track “Whiplash,” a sassy house anthem co-produced by British DJ and producer Shift K3Y, known for his work with artists like Becky Hill. With its catchy bass-heavy beat and uplifting lyrics, “Whiplash” captures the confident, ‘it girl’ energy that aespa is known for. The music video adds great visuals that match the song’s high-energy feel.

Beyond the title track, Whiplash shows aespa’s ability to explore new genres while staying true to their bold style. “Kill It” combines hip-hop and dance with strong beats and powerful vocals, where the group confidently stands up against negativity. The song sends a clear message to the hate they receive, reminding them of aespa’s strength.

The EP then shifts to a more thoughtful vibe with “Flights, Not Feelings,” a smooth mid-tempo R&B song that highlights aespa’s amazing vocals. Its uplifting lyrics encourage listeners to let go of negativity and embrace freedom, making it one of the more reflective tracks on the album.

For longtime fans, “Pink Hoodie” offers a familiar yet refreshing sound, featuring the catchy synths and deep bass that aespa is known for. The pink hoodie symbolizes comfort and confidence, fitting perfectly with the album’s theme of self-assurance.

Another highlight (and personal favourite) is “Flowers,” an alt-R&B track that combines smooth guitar riffs with dreamy lyrics about love and passion. The EP wraps up with “Just Another Girl,” a pop-rock anthem with gritty guitars that tells a story of betrayal and self-worth. While the song sounds energetic and uplifting, it explores the emotional ups and downs of heartbreak, giving the album a bittersweet but empowering finish… (oh dear, what a rollercoaster!).

aespa will be on tour next year with their “aespa LIVE TOUR – SYNK : PARALLEL LINE”. We can’t wait to see the girls on stage! Until then, we’ll be streaming Whiplash full on repeat.
