In case you didn’t know, the Judy Blume classic, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, is getting a movie adaptation. The movie stars Rachel McAdams as Margaret’s mum Barbara and Abby Ryder Fortson from Ant-Man as Margaret. The movie is out now in the UK and to celebrate, we are sharing the 5 moments from the Judy Blume book that we can’t wait (well, hoping, since you never know what they will cut) to see in the adaption.
We would say “spoilers alert” but then the book has been out for 50 years. So if you still haven’t read it, it’s your fault.
The Bust Chant: “I must- I must- I must increase our bust” We would be so mortified if we got overheard chanting this, and we would for sure get second hand embarrassment for Margaret and her friends but this is such a classic. You can watch this in this clip here.
The shopping trip: We are ashamed to admit that sometimes we are still slightly embarrassed to be seen holding a sanitary napkin to the washroom. Margaret and Janie experienced something similar when they wanted to buy pads and found out it’s a boy behind the cash register. While Janie tries to bolt, Margaret decided to march up to the register. We are so proud of her here!
The conversation between Margaret and Laura: Throughout the book, Margaret believes her friend Nancy’s stories about Laura. The conversation between Margaret and Laura is so important because it teaches young girls about loving and supporting other women, and it also plays an important role in Margaret’s self-discovery journey.
The grandparents’ visit: For some reason many people remember this book as a book about growing up, period, and boobs but as suggested by the book title, this is a book about Margaret figuring out what religion she belongs to. And her grandparents’ visit is such a pivotal moment to this journey.
Bonus:
The period belt: The original edition from 1970 mentioned a period belt, and we were incredibly confused — why do you need to use a belt when you are on your period? While the new(er) edition released in 1986 just mentions a pad, we are hoping to see a sanitary napkin belt make an appearance.
