If any of you watched the VMAs last month, there’s no doubt you saw Lorde‘s interpretive dance performance to her track ‘Homemade Dynamite.’ Because of the singer’s battle with the flu at the time, she wasn’t able to showcase her vocals but instead decided to give a fun dance routine for her appearance. Even though she came through in true Lorde fashion, some people didn’t particularly like it.
Lorde is sticking to her guns and standing up to the haters, saying she felt nothing but pure happiness while up on that stage. “It’s sort of embarrassing to watch someone experience intense joy… Way more than pain… And I think that’s why people find what I do quite disconcerting,” she says.
She even spoke out on her Instagram about the amount of backlash her performance was getting with a very insightful response.

Lorde is anything but the “normal popstar.” With her eccentricity in her performances, her music style, and innovative lyrics—Lorde gives us a whole new meaning to being genuine. Her bravery to showcase her quirks and creativity is something we could all learn from.
For some, this rendition of ‘Homemade Dynamite’ wasn’t what they were expecting, but it certainly blew up on social media in a unique way. There’s even been a Twitter dedicated to just edited videos of different popular songs behind Lorde’s iconic dance routine at the VMAs—songs like the ‘Star Wars’ theme, ‘Swish Swish’ by Katy Perry and ‘This Is What Dreams Are Made Of’ by Hilary Duff.

While this whole ordeal has given us plenty of great jokes and laughs on social media, there’s no question Lorde has proven she’s a big star that’s here to stay. Her VMA performance may not have been everyone’s cup of tea but it’s evident she was full of pure cheer while up on that stage—something we should all strive to have in our everyday lives.
