I’ll be the first to admit I was skeptic. After watching the not so great ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Batman V Superman’ films, I was afraid DC wouldn’t deliver. I was scared that ‘Wonder Woman‘ wouldn’t be that epic female superhero movie we’d been waiting for. Boy, was I SO wrong on all accounts.
I walked into the cinema with high expectations and some doubts, and I walked out with those expectations exceeded and those doubts destroyed. Finally, DC got something right. Welcome back to the battlefield, I missed you.
First of all, I would like to commend Gal Gadot for her flawless portrayal of Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman. She’s amazing. There is literally nothing Gal cannot pull off in this movie. She’s funny, beautiful, determined, strong and powerful. I dare you to find somebody better for the role. I’ll wait. Also, Chris Pine as Steve Trevors surprised me. He did a fantastic job. I wasn’t sure what to think but after watching, my mind was swayed. I may or may not have shed a few tears later on. You’ll know why after you’ve watched it.
One thing I didn’t like about the former two DC films were how messy the plot was. It was very hard to follow at times and the character development was handled poorly. However, in ‘Wonder Woman’, the storyline actually flowed really well and Diana’s character development into Wonder Woman was everything I needed. The storyline was executed amazingly that if you aren’t familiar with the origins of Wonder Woman, you’ll be able to fall in love with her regardless. It was simple and not too over complicated.
And those fight scenes. Damn. Fun fact about me: I really love fight scenes. That moment when Wonder Woman goes charging into the war zone, shield front and centre while all the bullets are bouncing off it. EPIC. I won’t spoil too much but you definitely get some awesome slow motion shots of Wonder Woman in action. And the Lasso of Truth is officially my favourite weapon. Fight me. Plus DC loves their huge final battle scenes, so expect that too.
I think that this was the perfect time for ‘Wonder Woman’ to hit the big screen as this sends such an important message to the young female generation. It shows them that women are strong. That they don’t need to be the damsels in distress all the time. It shows them that women are powerful and can do anything they set their minds too. Gender norms are thrown out the window because now, boys aren’t the only ones that can be a hero.
We live in a world where girls are taught that they have to act and dress a certain way. That they have to let boys handle the hard stuff. That they’re the princesses who get saved by the prince. But ‘Wonder Woman’ smashes that superhero glass ceiling and changes the entire game. And what’s even better is the female director behind it all: Patty Jenkins. The Queen behind the scenes. We all bow down to you.
Make sure you all go out and watch the game-changing superhero film as soon as it’s out. ‘Wonder Woman’ proves itself to be one of the best DC films yet.
