Why it’s time for a female superhero to hit the big screen

I think we’ve had enough male superheroes gracing our screens. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my superheroes. My favourites are Captain America, and Black Widow. I know, so mainstream. However, that’s only Marvel. DC is a whole other story. With the world changing at a rapid pace, it feels like the right time for a female superhero.

Our kids are becoming so much more aware of the world around them at such an early age, it’s scary. When girls watch male superheroes fighting bad guys in every movie, it gives the impression that girls don’t do that. They stay on the sidelines and look pretty. It’s time to break these stereotypes. ‘Supergirl‘ and ‘Wonder Woman’ have already begun to shatter the glass.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy ‘Supergirl’, however I binged the entire first season in a few weeks. I loved the positive message it bought to the audience. Finally there was a TV show that kids could watch that did the impossible – having a female superhero front and centre. Not just as the sidekick. And it’s about damn time.

And now, ‘Wonder Woman’ will hit the big screen in 2017 – in her own solo movie. How many films have you seen where the female is always helping the main superhero? Too many. I love the character of Black Widow and I think her character has a really interesting background, however, we’ve only gotten a glimpse. She’s starred in many Marvel films and still gets the short end of the stick. So kudos to DC for actually making the first step with Wonder Woman.

So why is this such a big deal? Because the guy ALWAYS gets the girl. What if she doesn’t want him? What if she wants to defend her city instead? Women shouldn’t have to sit back and watch. I want to live in a world where men and women are treated equally. A world where our children can turn on the TV and see equality. Having Supergirl and Wonder Woman being the stars of their own franchise is just the beginning.

So what if your son wants to play with dolls? So what if your daughter wants to play with monster trucks? It doesn’t matter. Boys don’t have to be tough. Girls don’t have to act like a “lady”. Having a Wonder Woman film hit the big screen is a huge thing. You can look gorgeous af and still kick some villain ass. Enough of “you shouldn’t do that because you’re a girl”. Go out there and be the hero you need to be.

The world is changing and it’s time we all join the right side of history.
