5 feelings migraine sufferers can relate to

0

For many years one of my closest friends has suffered from crippling migraines. I’d often get a bit disheartened when she would have to cancel plans because of them. It’s something I never understood until February last year. I’d suffered from headaches on and off for a few years, but suddenly I started to get the horrendous symptoms that went with it.

At first, my GP reckoned I had a sinus infection. But when that didn’t subside after a week, I started to get a bit concerned. The worst thing you can do is Google your symptoms. After convincing myself that I had God knows what wrong with me, I went back to the Doctors and got referred to my Optician. To cut a long story short they told me I was suffering from migraines.

For anyone who has ever suffered from this horrendous condition, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I mention these 5 things we all go through

Nausea, vomiting and blurred vision

This is how my symptoms began and it’s what made me worry the most. The only way I could describe the sensation was like being drunk but without the alcohol. I was aware of my surroundings but everyone around me was all out of focus. The feeling of wanting to throw up without actually throwing up is so debilitating.

Pains in both sides of your head

The only thing I can compare this sensation to is having your head crushed in a vice. Not that this has ever happened to me obviously, but it’s a pretty close comparison. As severe as this sounds, it really is that bad. The feeling of pressure is so intense, it actually feels like my head is going to explode.

Throbbing and pulsing

Do you ever get a twitchy feeling in your eye or a pulse feeling in your leg? Imagine you have one in your head. The only difference being – your entire head feels like it’s got a giant heartbeat going on inside.

Sensitivity to light

Any light (even if it’s the glare from the TV) can be too much to handle. The only solution to avoid this is by sitting or lying in a completely dark room. Quite difficult when it’s day time so you end up rocking an eye mask for the best part of the day

Feeling light headed

Have you ever fainted? It’s a weird sensation. Well, the feeling you get before you pass out is constantly there. Quite scary because you don’t actually know whether you will or not.

Not everybody suffers from all of these symptoms, but if you’re unlucky like me then you’ll have all 5. As much as I’d like to say you kind of get used to them, they never get any better. There’s only really so much your Doctor can do and yes they can give you certain medication. Unfortunately, I’m yet to have any that cure the symptoms completely. For now, it’s just one of those things I have to get on with.
